Report: Giants invite Bonds to celebration of greatest outfielders

The San Francisco Giants are throwing a party for their best outfielders, and Barry Bonds is invited.
The team, which is celebrating its 50th year in San Francisco since moving from New York, is honoring outfielders from its five decades in California. Bonds was one of those invited to take part, the San Francisco Chronicle reported Tuesday.

"We invited all the outfielders who played a certain number of games. He definitely was invited," team vice president for communications Staci Slaughter said, according to the report. "We would love for him to come. He was definitely a big part of this organization."
Slaughter said Bonds has yet to respond to the invitation, the newspaper reported. Major League Baseball's all-time home run king has not made a public appearance at AT&T Park since he was let go by the Giants following the 2007 season.
Phone and e-mail messages left with Bonds' public relations representatives were not immediately returned, the newspaper reported.
Bonds led the majors last season with a .480 on-base percentage. He finished the year with 762 career home runs and became a free agent when the Giants did not bring him back. But he has not been picked up by any major league team this season.
Bonds is facing a federal indictment alleging that he lied when he told a grand jury in 2003 he didn't knowingly use performance-enhancing drugs. A trial is scheduled to start March 2 in San Francisco.
